RIM launch new Curve 8900 in Germany



The new BlackBerry Curve 8900 - previously known as Javelin - has been announced in the German market exclusively on T-Mobile.

With the same high-res screen and new OS as the recent BlackBerry Bold - this handset also features GPS and Wifi but differs from the recent Bold as this model does not feature 3G.

Release in further european markets and networks is expected over the coming months.

Nokia Announce new Mass Market Messaging handset - Nokia E63

Nokia have announced a new Eseries messaging handset - the Nokia E63.



The design of this handset reflects the business aspect of the Nokia E71 (with corporate email and personal email services) but with a design aesthetic appealing to a wider audience.


The Nokia E63 will be available in ruby red or ultramarine blue with a range of multimedia features - availability end 2008.

RIM to Launch BlackBerry Application Storefront and BlackBerry Application Center

Research In Motion (RIM) have announced interesting plans to launch an application Storefront and Application sites to allow direct interaction between BlackBerry Users and application developers.

The Storefront will open in March 2009 and this will allow BlackBerry Users to browse and buy/download from the on-device application center as well as browse for apps in the online Storefront (BES software policies will still apply).

The Google G1 announced by T-Mobile



The Google G1 - the first from the search-engine giant has been announced exclusively on T-Mobile.

This is the first handset running the new operating system (Android) based on the open-source Linux platform.


First impressions of the handset (manufactured by HTC) are good -the basic systems (3G/HSDPA, Wifi and GPS) are on a par with all the top Smartphones on the market and the full-qwerty keyboard allows for quick and easy data entry .However it will be in the new interface and rich HTML web-browser and other web services that this new OS should deliver the goods, the new OS should also allow those with technical knowledge to easily create their own 'Widgets' for the handset.

Email services on the handset deliver only pop3 and IMAP and not direct Microsoft Exchange services.

Release in the UK is scheduled for November

HTC have announced news and details of the successor to the popular S730 (Candy-bar, keyboard enabled Smartphone) with the HTC S740.

Nokia reveal two new e-series handsets


Nokia's E-series of handsets continues with the introduction of the slim and sleek E71 and E66.

Both offerring professional access to email whilst maintaining the Nokia high standard of voice and data communications.

O2 release two new HSDPA/HSUPA Data cards



O2 have released two new versions of the Sierra Wireless PC Cards for laptops - One standard PCMCIA and a new Express card for PCMCIA express enabled laptops and UMPC's.

Both offer excellent data connectivity to GPRS/3G networks and will offer HSDPA and HSUPA (High Speed Downlink/Uplink) speeds from 1.2mb/s up to 7.2 mb/s where available. (see coverage map here)

Vodafone Launches new style USB Modem


The latest version of Vodafone's USB modem range now includes a USB stick style (rather than the USB dongle or cable connected modems).

Operating using data download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps (14 times faster than standard 3G) where available this 3g/HSDPA device also offers HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) speeds of up to 1.4 Mb/ps.

The new USB Stick modem will be available from the 10th of January.

The USB Dongle style modem below (with connecting cable) has also been re-styled and is available now.


Vodafone have also upgraded the network in the busiest areas to 3.6Mbps to deliver a more robust service, enabling existing customers to enjoy faster data speeds in mobile broadband 7.2 areas (see previous posted 7.2 information here).

Samsung SGH-M110 - Rugged handset

The Samsung SGH-M110 rugged handset will be available in December.

This is a very simple handset (dual band/VGA camera) targeted towards construction and any who work outdoors.
It is rated as dust/water/drop proof (IP54 drop up to 1 meter), Bluetooth is also a feature for connectivity to headsets/handsfree car kits.

JCB Tough Phone Launched


JCB have launched a rugged handset for the UK market - Handsets of this type were once available from a number of manufacturers but in recent years their focus has turned to music and camera handsets.


The JCB ToughPhone fills this niche market with a handset able to hold up to IP53 specifications (i.e.Drop/Splash/Shock/Dust resistant)

The handset has a glare and scratch resistant screen with an integrated loud speaker designed for very noisy environments - for example construction.
